At the beginning of the twentieth century, the ruling and scientific heads of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, one of the most powerful countries in continental Europe, planned to build a modern resort in a wooded mountain in the east of their newly annexed province of Bosnia, in order to compete with other European monarchies. The Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy was the second-largest country in Europe (behind Imperial Russia). All the findings of its scientists determined that the air of Han Pijesk would be the most suitable for a comfortable stay and treatment of the old and asthmatic emperor Franz Joseph I. Construction plans hindered by the Great War, and after the collapse of the empire after the war, King Alexander the Unifier decided to build himself a summer house, officially the Hunting Castle, in the vast forest on Javor Mountain. Construction began in 1919, and the entire complex was completed in 1924. The royal family stayed often, and in addition to them, high-ranking world officials such as Atatürk and Nimani were often received, and economic forums were held under the leadership of Milan Stojadinović and alike. The castle burned down for the first time in 1943 after being bombed by a German aircraft. It was restored in 1946 (not very authentically) and named Tito’s Castle. Unlike the King, there is no evidence that the Marshal stayed there. The castle (Tito’s) burned down again in 2005 and it has been in ruins since. The restoration started again in 2023 according to the original appearance and in accordance with the obtained approval from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical, and Natural Heritage of the Republic of Srpska.
